Swedish Prisons are Overfull – Acute Crisis

The Swedish Prison and Probation Service is working to make more places for prisoners. In three years, there have been 1,000 new places. The authority is planning for 2,000 new places. Several completely new prisons will be built. But it’s not enough. This is not because there is a lack of money. The government gives more than one billion kronor to the Swedish Prison and Probation Service for two years in its budget.

The reason is that so many more criminals have been sentenced to prison in recent years. It continues to increase, says Martin Holmgren.
